Volunteering in the summer

As a rising Senior at Chapel Hill High School, North Carolina I wanted to share my perspective on why it's so important to Volunteering in the summer months. I try to have a well rounded summer but always include service learning during my summer break and here’s why you should do the same..

  • The summer is when all students have time off, this being the case, so many students take this time and do not use it efficiently. Instead they can use this time and give back to the community.
  • If you are planning on the college admissions process, Community service looks great on a student’s resume. Volunteering can help any student stand out, whether it be an application for a job, or even college. If a student cares about a cause so much that they are willing to work on it for free, a big level of commitment and responsibility is demonstrated.
  • Lastly, volunteering in the summer is important simply because giving back is the right thing to do. Whether it be financial struggles or not even having enough food to nourish the body, we have all been in a place where we have needed help. However most of us are fortunate enough to be given the necessities of life: food, shelter, and clothing. Due to this, we should do everything we can to help those who do not have those necessities. If we were in the position of the less fortunate, we would need it.

Personally, I have used Letserve to find opportunities that matter to me and leveraged that to volunteer a few hours a week in the summer. Some of the non-profits I have worked with are PORCH, Orange County Teen Court, Durham Rescue Mission and more…
