This Community Garden will be maintained and sustained by local volunteers from partner community organizations (Kiwanis Club of Topsail Island Area, Surf City Rotary, Share the Table, Surf City Moose Lodge, Aktion Club of Topsail – Adults with Disabilities Service Club), youth clubs, middle/ high school students, home-schooled students, faith-based youth groups, scout groups and clients of Share the Table. The partnership will focus on growing vegetables and produce year-round with welcome direction from the North Carolina Extension of NC State University. The Community Garden project will offer adult and youth volunteers the opportunity to: Promote healthier lifestyles Donate nutritious food for STT clients Make fresh produce accessible Build a more robust community Meet people with a shared interest Engage children in experiential learning Gain knowledge about gardening Reduce neighborhood waste through composting Increase access to fresh food Improve food security Improve dietary habits through education Increase fruit and vegetable intake Reduce the risk of obesity and obesity-related diseases Increase physical activity through garden maintenance activities Relieve stress and increase the overall sense of wellness
