Greater Topsail Area Community Garden
Description

About the Greater Topsail Community Garden The Greater Topsail Community Garden is a thriving, volunteer-powered initiative rooted in intergenerational leadership, community collaboration, and a commitment to expanding healthy food access. Established in 2023 through a partnership between the Kiwanis Club of Topsail Island and Surf City Rotary, the garden transforms one acre of cultivated land into a hub for learning, connection, and nourishment. All produce and herbs grown at the garden are donated to Share the Table, a local nonprofit food pantry, as part of the Expanding Healthy Choices Program. In its first full year of growing (2024), the garden completed 55 harvests, donating over 2,800 pounds of fresh produce—valued at nearly $24,000—to families facing food insecurity in Pender and Onslow Counties. With over 2,000 volunteer hours logged annually and support from more than 85 individuals, families, and organizations, the garden serves as a model for inclusive, sustainable community building. In addition to standard raised beds, the garden features ADA-accessible beds that ensure individuals with physical challenges can participate fully in planting, harvesting, and experiencing the therapeutic benefits of gardening. The garden also hosts educational events, youth internships, Eagle Scout projects, and creative outreach such as public art installations—including the beloved Rocco the Rock Snake and a volunteer-painted garden tool shed. At its core, the Greater Topsail Community Garden is more than a place to grow food—it’s a place to grow hope, partnerships, and purpose for every member of the community. Volunteering is open to all ages, and there are opportunities available every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Not all garden work involves getting dirty—there are ways for everyone to contribute. As a bonus, anyone who stops by to volunteer is invited to paint a rock to add to Rocco and become part of the community story!
