Friends of Geer Cemetery was established as a grassroots organization in 2003. In 2019, the group re-organized and we are now a 501c3 non-profit organization. Our goal is to preserve and honor the place, and bring people back to it. We are focused on clean-up, restoration of headstones, identifying graves, and researching and sharing the histories of the people. Friends of Geer Cemetery mission is to reclaim, restore, and respect Durham’s first African American burial ground. We celebrate and honor the lives and legacies of those laid to rest in this sacred place through preservation, storytelling, education, and community-building.
