"The Southern Village Aging in Place" organization was established in the spring of 2013. We aim to establish a self-governing, community-based organization that provides a social network, and coordinates access to a variety of support services. We have approximately 100 members. Although we have focused primarily on the benefits of social networking, we are expanding to provide more activities such as collecting information on available support services in the Chapel Hill area. These services include establishing a process to support members in need because of a short term illness, or disability. We are anxious to seek a connection with the Chapel Hill/Carrboro School district that would be mutually beneficial. Some suggestions have been tutoring, helping with special assignments or projects. The chance to share the knowledge of seniors with students. Our mission is to be a self-governing, grassroots, community-based organization that provides a social network, minimizes social alienation, and coordinates access to a variety of services that promote social integration, health, and well-being.
